For those not up on the genre, “Dembow” or “Dembow Dominicano” is the DR’s take on modern reggaeton, but with a clear aesthetic distinction where (as my friend Wayne Marshall from Wayneandwax.com says) “the Dominican artists and producers working in the style essentially proceed as if the reggaeton boom never happened, as if Luny Tunes’ once hegemonic synth-romps never held sway.” A quick skim through this mix will make it immediately clear what Wayne is saying: while Dembow Dominicano is dependent on the same building blocks that informed reggaeton (sampling staple dancehall riddims like “Bam Bam,” “Fever Pitch,” “Dem Bow,” “Action”, etc), most of the genre has little in common with the melodic and dramatic, synth-heavy reggaeton jams that were ubiquitous 10-15 years ago. DR Dembow is primarily rhythmic, hard, bass-heavy, unabashedly street, relatively fast (with most modern Dembow joints clocking in somewhere between 110 and 130 bpm, which is much faster than the more common mid-90s bpm of reggaeton) and, notably, also extremely popular with many Dembow artist hitting tens of millions of views on Youtube. This isn’t some underground sub-genre that nobody knows about. It’s extremely popular in cities with large Latin communities. A bunch of Dembow artists are even performing alongside Fat Joe and Wisin at MSG in August if you want to attend!
While it most certainly isn’t the first Dembow song, the first song that really did any significant numbers was Doble T & El Crow’s “Pepe.” In a lot of respects, the song isn’t much more than a 90s dancehall song with spanish lyrics, which isn’t surprising given that the entire song is built on chopping up elements of the “Bam Bam” Riddim and the “Fever Pitch” Riddim. While these two riddims serve as a starting point for so many of the songs in the genre, you’ll notice that as Dembow has matured over the past couple years, the producers have begun expanding their aesthetic range pretty dramatically, all while still staying remaining within the Bam Bam/Fever Pitch pocket.
It feels necessary for me to make it clear that I am by no means an expert on Dembow. It’s a genre I stumbled across only a few months ago (even though it’s been popping for 7 or 8 years now) and I wanted to learn more about it. I decided the most effective way for me to learn was to start researching and collecting songs and put a mix together… so I did.
I tried to put together a mix that did the following:
(a) represented a variety of aesthetics within Dembow, from the more “basic” 90s dancehall-focused stuff, to the more bass-heavy modern and aesthetically adventurous stuff
(b) showcased many of the really popular joints with tens of millions of youtube hits, but also touched on some lesser known joints that I just happen to like
(c) was fun to listen to! Youtube and Spotify playlists are great, but I’m a DJ, and I wanted to put together a seamless mix that would get your afterparty jumpin’… or be a good mix to jam to in the whip or while working out or whatever.
